Michael O'Reilly "Mike" Tackney, age 82, of Abingdon, Va., passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024.
Born April 20, 1942, in San Diego, Calif. to the late Stephen Tackney and Priscilla Talbott Tackney, he grew up in Falls Church, Va. graduating with honors from George Mason High School in 1960. He graduated with honors from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1964 and followed with an 8-year career in the U.S. Navy. He served as a Swift Boat captain during the Vietnam War.
Mike went on to found Air and Process Systems, an engineering design firm, of Baton Rouge, La.
Mike was a consummate athlete - loving biking, hiking, skiing, tennis, and basketball. Go LSU Tigers.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 46 years, Mary; daughter, Karen Lohnes and husband, Tim; son, Stephen Tackney and husband, Peter LaGow; step-daughter, Amanda Sanders and husband, Kurt Jackman; daughter, Erin Tackney and husband, Chris Paetsch; two sisters, Priscilla Buck and husband, Michael, and Mimzy Tackney-Moen and husband, Dan; seven grandchildren: Jude and Owen Jackman, Harrison and Hiromi Paetsch, Ike, Dutch and Ford Lohnes.
In addition to his parents, Mike was also preceded in death by four siblings, Peter Tackney, Margaret Tackney, Catherine Blackwell and David Tackney.
A service in celebration and thanksgiving for the life of Michael O'Reilly Tackney will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. in the St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 124 E. Main St., Abingdon, Va. 24210, with the Rev. Dr. Boyd Evans officiating.
